Introduction

Dutch milk tokens should be seen in conjunction with bread tokens and cooperative tokens. They represent a period in which industrialisation and mechanisation, also in the agricultural sector, caused dire poverty in the country, relatively large scale moves to the cities and thereby new poverty in the cities, not relieved by industries that could only compete on price, including leather, textile and basic metal industries.

Socialism proposed a solution for poverty by mutual assistance. This lead to competition with the Roman catholic church, the traditional purveyor for the poor. The government tried to respond with neutral policies and initiatives, adding a third segment to the phenomenon of segmentation (verzuiling). The listing below includes (lower) government efforts as well as Roman catholic efforts, but also non-cooperative local farmer initiatives. Cooperative milk and dairy enterprises CAMIZ and C.Z. Hoogeveen are listed among the cooperatives. DEKKER & Co. "De landbouw" is a restaurant. While milk was served and popular there, it is not listed here. Deposit tokens are not listed here. Some tokens have an unidentified issuer, which may mean that they could be moved to another section if more information on their issuer becomes available.

We have leaned on the excellent research of Mr. A. J. Kooij in his book Catalogus van Nederlandse Betaal- en Reclamepenningen, Vriezenveen 2008, ISBN 9789070067267. This book covers all metallic tokens of the Netherlands. However, we have also done research ourselves.
