Rabo bank

Any history of cooperative banking in the Netherlands must start with Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen (1818-1888). All over Europe, there are banks that still carry his name, or - as in the Netherlands - part of his name. Raiffeisen found the way to exclude middlemen - often the source of corruption and usury by starting cooperative organisations supported by the wealthy. Later in life, he promoted local cooperative financial organisations. When they came about, their main problem turned out to be temporary liquidity squeezes - farming is subject to important seasonal effects - and lack of credit due to lack of size. Raiffeissen saw a cooperative of cooperatives as the solution: cooperative banks should give each other credit.

Raiffeisen's ideas had variants. One of these was that of Franz Hermann Schulze (1808-1883). His variant, the credit union (Volksbank), was aimed at the middle class, rather than the poor.

The first Dutch cooperative bank was Coöperatieve Voorschotbank (cooperative credit bank), established in Naaldwijk in 1895. It was largely based on Raiffeisen's ideas, but contained elements of Schulze's variant also. From 1910, it put Boerenleenbank - agricultural credit bank in its name. In 1896, a Dutch Roman catholic priest, father Gerlacus van den Elsen, established Nederlandsche Boerenbond - Dutch agricultural association, to improve the financial situation of farmers by aiming at the poor and using the Raiffeisen model. Meanwhile, the legal situation of cooperatives was complicated by a well meant law on cooperatives (1876). After all, there was a law from 1855 that already opened the possibility to establish a cooperative by royal decree. The main difference between the two regulations was that the 1876 law required an act by a notary public, a relatively costly affair.

However, while Boerenbond argued that the 1876 method had a more solid legal liability arrangement, it admitted cooperations founded by the route of the 1855 law. The result was a schism in the cooperative banking movement. In the protestant North of the country, cooperatives largely went by the 1876 law calling themselves (Coöperatieve) Boerenleenbank, while in the catholic South, the 1855 route prevailed and cooperative banks were known as Raiffeisenbank. When the cause of the problem was long solved and forgotten, the religious difference fit well with the division into segments (verzuiling) of the country, so the two-fold organisation was maintained until 1972.

Both banks developed a cooperative of cooperatives in 1898. Coöperatieve Vereniging van Raiffeisenbanken en Landbouwverenigingen te Utrecht - cooperative association of Raiffeisen banks and agricultural associations in Utrecht led the way, followed within months by Coöperatieve Centrale Boerenleenbank gevestigd te Eindhoven - cooperative central agricultural credit bank established in Eindhoven. The two central organisations were indispensable for a proper functioning of the local banks, so they had no trouble uniting all Dutch cooperative banks.

Night vault.jpg

Slowly, very slowly a discussion started on the position of middle income, non-agricultural clients, often resulting in a position of "we'd rather not have them as clients, but we won't refuse them". The matter came to a head after the second world war. The role of coins and banknotes was diminishing quickly, salaries were no longer paid cash and an increasing number of financial transactions was made by bank transfer, very often between different banks. Staff had to be professionalised. Duplication of local branches became financially painful. Banks became deeply involved in software development, an activity that requires scale, something the local banks did not have.

The inevitable consequence was turning the agricultural banks into general banks and merging the two central organisation into Rabobank in Utrecht, with its statutory HQ in Amsterdam. In its new role, Rabobank could expand outside the country. It is now the second bank in the country.

The tokens are of two kinds. The older ones were used to obtain a cassette for use in the "night vault" machines (photo: Collectie Rabobank Bedrijfshistorie, showing cassette and key to open night vault deposit machine.) These machines, integrated into an outer wall of the bank, allowed business clients to make deposits outside the bank's opening hours. The other tokens were tools in marketing campaigns.

Marketing and sponsoring tokens

The tokens in the table below are listed by date of issue. They may use three different logos. While the 1972 logo (white graph on blue background or blue graph on white background) is very different from the 1994 logo (sundial with person as pin), the latter is subtly different from the 2008 logo. The easiest way to distinguish the two is that whereas on the 1994 logo, the sundial has Roman numerals, it has only notches on the 2008 version.

Art medals

While art medals are not tokens, they fit into the series presented above. Rather than commercial or advertising instruments, art medals tend to be souvenirs or rewards after a project is completed successfully. Thechnically, the difference between the two is not sharp, but an art medal often has a higher relief.

Notes Produced by Begeer. Construction of Ridderzaal, the central hall of the Binnenhof fortified complex started in or shortly after 1248. This date is taken as the founding date of the town (The Hague never got city rights). Today, Binnenhof is the seat of the Dutch government and Ridderzaal is used for ceremonial sessions.
