The village was formed in the mid-19th century between Airdire and Caldercruix to house miner. Ardenrigg Coal Company was based in Plains. Coal activity dwindled in the second half of the 20th century. A railway station opened in 1882. This closed in 1951.

PLAINS CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1888-1932
The society was formed in 1888. BY 1922 the society had a branch in Airdrie[1]
The society went into voluntary liquidation in 1931 with a liquidator being appointed in November[2]. Chapelhall took over the store in December, which became Chapelhall Branch No. 5 [3].
