Howwood Co-operatives
Howwood is a village to the west of Johnstone. Unlike other villages in Renfrewshire, that developed as cloth milling towns, the industry that developed in Howwood was cloth finishing. The two busnesses were Bowfield and Midtownfield Bleachworks, the latter being established in 1835. A train station was opened in 1876. The train station closed in 1955 and the last operating bleachworks, Bowfield, closed in 1960. The village is now a dorimtory village for the local towns and Glasgow.
The map opposite, from a reproduction with the permission of the National Library of Scotland, shows Howwood in 1895 with Midtownfield Bleachworks to the East. Bowfield Bleachworks was twice as far away to the South.
HOWWOOD CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1872-1949
The society was formed in 1872
