Another image doing rounds on FB: 1000 Years of Coronation of Raja Rajendra Chola. I'm sure this is an idea only, not approved by government yet?

Generally if something is put up by Sudhir Lunawat, its more or less confirmed. Lets wait and watch.

Does this person work in the Finance Ministry? Is it insider information or through RTI? It is quite amazing for limited individuals to have such unrestricted access to information and be worth finding the 'source'. Anyway, India Post did release a stamp on Rajendra Chola last year in March 2015 during a conference on Indian Ocean (See here: http://betterphilately.blogspot.com/2015/03/india-post-needs-research-unit-for.html).

Well if you are in the right circle and know people in the mint, you would know what issues are being considered or designed.

Maharana Pratap has been in offing for quite sometime. As to whether we should have it again as we had it in 2003 is an individual opinion. But it looks like all set to get one this year.

I feel very bad for Republic India collectors...it's a road to bankruptcy for them! So many issues in a single year?!? Are these mint guys nuts?

There is a message thread with this topic as well. This coin release is officially confirmed by the government, while some of the recent ones have yet to be notified. The pictures being posted on Facebook look so unreal. A similar picture for the Dr. B. R. Ambedkar coin had no resemblance to the actual coin released in Dec 2015. The Facebook guy just makes them up on his own. Good for him.

Pretty sure the official explanation will be that the first coin was only to honor the valor and sacrifice of this Mewar ruler, but the latest one is to commemorate a special occasion, viz. Maharana Pratap's 475th birth anniversary. One wonders if another coin will be released during the 500th birth anniversary (Year 2040) as well, or is that too far to think ahead?

It's easy to create a coin design. Refer to board on member design, where members have created coins for fun.

That would depend on which party is in power.

Maharana Pratap is standard recommendation from Rajasthan every year. Very much like Shivaji from Maharashtra, Gandhi from Gujarat, Subhash Bose from Bengal.
It was only when there was a Vice President from Rajasthan that a coin on Rathore was issued.

Other states apparently have more varied recommendations.

Some topics from central ministries are more interesting since they commemorate events or organisations and not individuals.

How exciting! At this rate I shall never have a complete collection of Indian coins.  That suits me just fine.  The fun of the hunt and all...I am amazed at what I can get in Oklahoma.

Don't stop there. With the internet, you can reach all dealers in the world and the only threshold is postal fees and regulations.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

I think mints missed a golden opportunity to issue commemorative coins on International Fleet Review 2016. Commemorative stamps were issued though...
