Derby Tramways Company was registered in 1877 and started operating horse trams in 1880. The first line ran from Market Place to the Midlands Railway station. Further lines were added from Victoria Street to Windmill Hill, The Spot to Cotton Lane and Normanton Hotel to The Spot and from London Road to Deadman's Lane by 1881. In order to build the tramway, the company had to acquire local horse omnibus companies and so also operated horse omnibus routes. In 1899 Derby Corporation took control of the company.

It was standard practice for the postal services to contract transport with the tramway companies. In some regions postal workers recieved standard impressed tokens to be used for delivering telegraphs. There were also specific postal worker tokens issued in places such as Barrow in Furness, Glasgow and Halifax. This practice continued into the era of celluloid transport tokens.

This token below is attributed to use by postal workers on the Derby Tramways Company services.
