Delftsche coöperatieve winkelvereeniging - Delft cooperative consumer association - was a brainchild of Arnold Polak Kerdijk (1846-1905), a colourful politician. The family name was changed to Kerdijk in 1859. Kerdijk moved to Delft. He attended the 1873 annual congress of consumer associations in Winchester. The same year, Kerdijk established Delftsche coöperatieve winkelvereeniging. While Kerdijk was elected first president, he was quickly succeeded by his brother in law J.C. Van Marken.

In 1874, a bakery and a shop was opened on Voldersgracht 4. Groceries, meat, sausages and dairy products were added in 1875. Some popular pharmaceutical products followed in 1877 and clothing as well as a separate shoe shop with repair facilities on Voorstraat broadened the cooperative services in 1880. The shoe shop moved to bigger premises on Markt 54 in 1882, while the grocery shop started selling wines, spirits and tobacco. Dividend peaked at 8¼%. In 1886, both shops moved to Voldersgracht 27 (Photo: Ymblanter via Wikimedia Commons). By 1896, the tokens had to be accompanied by paper coupons.

At the same time, local political resistance against cooperatives increased, resulting in a diminishing number of members, leading to lower dividend. This vicious cycle led to liquidation of the cooperation in 1900 with an important deficit that had to be financed by the members.
