Cockenzie was created a burgh in 1591 and developed as a coal shipping port. In 1960 Cockenzie Power Station was built, dominating the town. Port Seton harbour was built nearby in 1865 for Lord Seton and developed as a fishing port. Cockenzie and Port Seton merged together a long time ago and are considered as one town.

The map opposite shows Cockenzie and Port Seton in 1906.

PORT SETON CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1865-1873 ?

No trace of a coperative society or store named Port Seton has been found. From the Post Office directories a co-operative society called Cockenzie Co-operative Society had established a store by 1866. This society is the most likely issuer of the token below. In April 1873 the store was advertising for a manager[1]. Around this time the store was taken over by Tranent.
