ALVA CO-OPERATIVE BAZAAR SOCIETY 1845-

The society was formed in 1845. In 1851 it had 63 members who recieved 15/- dividend on £2 shares. By 1863 it was paying dividends to members and non-members on purchases. It also declared that it should no longer work on credit. As with other societies, not all products sold were entitled to a dividend. The society formally stopped working on credit in 1865, which caused a lot of dissatisfaction in the society. In February 1866 a meeting was held to look into forming a new soceity, Ochilvale Society. - the Ochilvale store was opened in May.

Bazaar was dropped from the title in 1951.

ALVA CO-OPERATIVE BAKING SOCIETY 1847-1911

The society was formed in 1847 with the objective to sell bread at the lowest possible profit. When the society was formed, bread in Alva was selling at 10d for a 4lb loaf, which the society sold for 8d[1]. In 1856 to compete with the society, bakers in Alloa were selling bread in Alva 1d cheaper than they were selling bread in Alloa and claiming that the society was adding excess rice to reduce cost.

The society joined to Bazaar in 1911.
