Alex Island

Rare token, Barry Island in UK

I do not have a reverse image. Does anyone have photos?

The first one looks to be a casino token, Alex. Do you know if it is?

Yes, very similar, Bruce. But I don't have a photo of the back of the token or other information yet.

I looked at the map. The area "Barry Island" is solidly connected to the mainland, admittedly also an island. Why do you call this an island. Because of its name?

This is another example of how a land once a real island is glued to the mainland, Henk :

QuoteUntil 1896, when a rail link with the mainland via a 250-yard long causeway was completed, the only access to Barry Island had been either on foot across the sand and mud at low tide, or when the tide was in, by ferry from the shore at the Old Harbour.

Both tokens certainly are much later than 1896. So why are these island tokens?

Anything where it says "island" means this is my collectible theme, anyway.

For many years about the only thing on Barry Island was the "Butlins" holiday camp

Thanks andyg. I am not a supporter of faleristics, but just in case, I keep photographs of such items on my topic. Here's another one in this format:

I excavated in my archive, and found a number of strange tokens that I have marked as belonging to the same island. I will show them here further, I am not quite sure and it is interesting to clarify. Maybe i'm wrong:

Barry is a town, separate to the Island bit - on the mainland.  So the co-op token isn't really especially for the Island bit.

The Butlins "tokens" are key fobs.
When you were given your set of keys for your chalet, you had to hand over a 2/6 deposit - so your keys were worth 2/6 providing you didn't lose them :)
