So any information on when circulating coins will have the new monarch, 2014?

Figleaf

Dutch newspaper "De Volkskrant" reported on 20th September that five designers submitted an entry for the new circulation coins. According to unnamed inside sources, a choice had been made for a design by photographer Erwin Olaf. Olaf isn't talking and neither is the Ministry of Finance. The newspaper speculates that choosing a photographer as designer fits the tradition to use new images and techniques on coins.

It reminds me of Luxembourg coin design. Unimaginative.  ::)

The €1 coin does not look that great in my opinion (see attached image from the mint's site), but the 5 ct coin for example has an interesting or even cool design.

Here are large images of the new pieces, designed by Erwin Olaf.

Side note: the 1 and 2 cent coins will only be made for sets and such.

It'll be different to see what they look like, the face seems different to normal designs. Yes the lines look kind of normal and boring for the Dutch, but maybe they'll grow on people.

The portrait style on the cent coins reminded me of the 50 gulden "Vorstinnenregering" coin issued in 1990:

But it looks fine in my opinion. What I do not like that much is the fact that they will still have only two different designs. Here is a video of the presentation.

So, after the computer layers, we get a lens induced kaleidoscope (I once had a lens like that.) Why not? The portrait is easily recognisable, the technique interesting and different, but untried. Laying a straight ribbon of text over the head on the lower values is a bit too easy for me. I would have preferred something a bit more clever. All in all not bad, though.

News from the mint: On 22 January, King Willem Alexander will do the ceremonial "first" strike at the KNM in Utrecht. On the next day - Thu 23 Jan - the new circulation coins will be issued to the public.

Seems that the Dutch government wants to take the "older" coin, featuring Beatrix, out of circulation. Not proactively, but according to this article (in German) a KNM spokesperson said that the mint will only make as many Willem Alexander coins as they can withdraw. We'll see whether that is accurate ...

Bluff or stupidity, I think. Even in a slowly growing economy, people will need more coins, even when electronic money advances, because the largest transactions are the first to be automated and the small transactions require the most coins. That policy would amount to giving away market share, especially to German mints.
