By the 1890s it was also being developed as a residential town for merchants working in Glasgow and the Tunnock's Bakery in the town was started. The town is now primarily a dormer town for Glasgow.

The map opposite, reproduced with the permission of the National Library of Scotland, shows Uddingston in 1897. Recent residential developements can be seen to the North and South of the town.

UDDINGSTON CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1861-1991

The society was formed in 1861. The store was opened in March 1862 with teh objective of selling good quality products at reasonbale prices[2]

The society became part of Scottish Midlands (ScotMid) in 1998.
