Overtown Co-operatives
Overtown developed as a mining village from the early 19th century. The opening of Pather Iron & Steel Works also provided local employment. A station was opened in 1843 by the Wishaw and Coltness Railway. A new station opened 1881 that was closer to Waterloo. Originally called Overtown Waterloo, it was renamed Overtown.
Pather Iron & Steel Works closed around 1935. The station was closed from 1917 to 1919 and permanently closed in 1942. Smith's clock factory was opened in 1951 on the Pather Iron & Steel Works site. This closed in the 1970 and the site is now a business park.
The town's population declined with the closure of the industry and the railway station.
The map opposite, reproduced with the permission of the National Library of Scotland, shows Overtown and the Pather Iron & Steel Works in 1896.
