Lanark Co-operatives
Lanark became a royal burgh in the 12th century. It developed as a market town around the castle and still has regular livestock sales. New Lanark was built close to Lanark on the bank of the River Clyde. Lanark developed as a weaving town in association with New Lanark with leather ware a secondary industry. By the 1860s the predominant employment in Lanark was still handloom weaving, although by this time the occupation was unreliable and not very well paid. A train station was opened in 1855, greatly increasing livestock trade and helped to established Lanark as a tourist destination based on the Clyde valley and the Falls of Clyde.

LANARK PROVIDENT CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1861-1969
In early 1861 a group of men met and agreed to form a co-operative society. They lacked funds so agreed to subscribe 3d per week. Eight months later. at teh end of November, they held a public meeting where rules were adopted. The society registerd in January 1862. In June £32 had been collected, so a shop was opened, with fixed stock costing £20. A salesman was emploed at 15s per week. To encourage sales the society paid a high dividend to non-members - for the first year members recievd a dividend of 6d in the £1 and non-members recieved 4d.
The society became a member of the SCWS in 1869. This included giving the SCWS a loan of £50, which caused some disruption amongst members, many of whom questioned the viability of the SCWS.
The society joined the SCRS in 1969.
