Greenock was a fishing village in the 17th century. It developed along with nearby Port Glasgow as a shipping port for Glasgow. In the 19th century industries included shipbuilding, marine engineering, sugar refining, and textile manufacture. The shipyard, which stretched to Port Glasgow, built many warships and passenger liners. Greenock remains the main west-coast shipping port for Scotland and is a cruise-ship terminal. However most of the older industries have been replaced by more modern industries.

GREENOCK CENTRAL CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1880-1984

Both Greenock Industrial and Greenock East End were based in the east end of Greenock. Workmen in the centre of Greenock sent a deputation to Greenock Industrial to request that a branch was opened in a central location. Greenock Industrial agreed to do so if £100 was subscribed and 50 members guaranteed. The deputation saw this as an unreasonbale request, so decided to setup their own co-operative. In March 1880 they started Greenock Co-operative Society and by the end of the first quarter had 65 members[1]. By 1884 the society had changed its name to Greenock Central o-operative Society to distinguish itself from the other co-operative societies in Greenock.

Meetings were held in 1900 to discuss amalgamation of the Greenck societies and Firth of Clyde[2]. Greenock Central rejected the amalgamation by 116 votes to 39, Greenock Industrial rejected amalgamation and Greenock East End meeting was inquorate. Shortly after this Greenock Industrial and Firth of Clyde had amalgamated to Greeock Central. In 1954 Greenock East End amalamated to Greenock Central and in 1955 te socity was once more calling itself Greenock Co-operative Society.

The society is reported as having a "Club" system from 1910. During the 1928 Renfrewshire Co-operative Association Conference mutuality clubs were discussed[3]. It was noted that by that time no society in the area had tried to introduce mutuality clubs.

GREENOCK UNITED CO-OPERATIVE COAL SOCIETY 1897-1903

The society was formed in 1897 by two of the Greenock co-operative societies. In 1898 all three societies were members with some individuals.

Greenock Industrial joined Greenock Central, a union of the two largest societies in Greenock, in May 1903. This left Greenock Central and the much smaller Greenock East End. This may have led to the questions being asked about the benefit of a joint coal society. The coal society was dissolved in September 1903[6].
