Gorebridge was developed with the establishment of Stobs Mills in 1794, Scotland's first large scale manufacturer of gunpowder. During the Napoleonic Wars Stobs Mills occupied he factory 1.2km of the river bank. A train station was opened in 1847 as part of the Waverle Route to Carlisle. GOREBRIDGE CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1864-1971
Inspired by the co-operative societies in Dalkeith and Penicuik, men from Gorebridge and HUnterfield met in late 1863 to discuss forming a co-operative society in Gorebridge[1]. In February 1864 they agreed to form a co-operative society. The original store was a cottage attached to Newbyres Farm. Within five years the society had started to bake it's own bread. The society started a van service to cover it's scattered and growing area of operation.
The society joined Scottih Midlands (ScotMid) in 1971.
