Gorebridge was developed with the establishment of Stobs Mills in 1794, Scotland's first large scale manufacturer of gunpowder. GOREBRIDGE CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1864-1971
Inspired by the co-operative societies in Dalkeith and Penicuik, men from Gorebridge and HUnterfield met in late 1863 to discuss forming a co-operative society in Gorebridge[1]. In February 1864 they agreed to form a co-operative society. The original store was a cottage attached to Newbyres Farm. Within five years the society had started to bake it's own bread. The society started a van service to cover it's scattered and growing area of operation.
The society joined Scottih Midlands (ScotMid) in 1971.
