BATHGATE CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1859-1969
The society was formed in 1859 as Bathgate Co-operative Baking Society by workers in the local papermill[1]. They opened store in January 1860 which, because the worked until 6pm, was only open from 7pm. The society sold a 4lb loaf for 5½d compared to the standard price of 6½d to 7d[2]. In October 1863 the society was considering open a provisions store to expand it's business[3], which led to the society changing it' name to Bathgate Co-operative Society in early 1864[4] - it was also paying dividends on member purchases in 1864. By October the society's new building was nearing completion and plans were in place to commence selling provisions groceries. In 1866 the society commenced selling meat. By 1874 the society had appointed a full-time manager [5]and was using checks by 1879[6].
The society united with Broxburn in 1969 to form West Lothian with it's head office in Bathgate. West Lothian joined Scottish Midland (ScotMid) in 1982.
