« on: January 30, 2011, 03:48:31 PM »
This square silver rupee of Akbar is ILAHI type coin with Year 37.

Can the mint be read?

Isn't "37" odd on a Kalima-type coin?

Isn't "37" odd on a Kalima-type coin?

Kindly refer to Type S-44 Coin from "Coinage of Akbar" by Andrew Liddle.

"Type S-44: As mentioned earlier during the last 20 years or so of Akbar's rule, the coinage underwent a complete change. The Kalima was replaced by Allah-uh-Akbar on the obverse with or without "Jal Jalalla" and the date was reckoned from Akbar's ascension to the throne and depicted as Ilahi year, sometimes with the Ilahi month as well. The name of the emperor was done away with.

The changeover was not smooth however. Atleast four mints continued to issue coins with Hijri Dates (Ahmedabad, Ujjain, Katak and Bangala) for a long time. As a compromise, perhaps, three of these mints (Ahemedabad, Bangala and Ujjain) issued Kalima type square coins with Ilahi Years, simultaneously, for some time.

Mint                      Date                           Weight                                   Size

AHMEDABAD        Ilahi 37 to 39          10.8 to 10.95 gms.              1.71 to 1.8 cms.

BANGALA              Ilahi 39 to 40            10.8 gms.                              2.0 cms.

UJJAIN                 Ilahi 31 to 41 &
                           Ilahi 43 to 46

The image given for S-44 type is that for Ahmedabad mint, and it matches exactly with this coin.

The mint on this coin is certainly not Ahmedabad, Bangala or Ujjain.
It seems like Akbarpur.

This may be true for Silver coins. I have observed AH dates on Copper coins of Chittor, Ajmer & Narnol (there could be many more) well past the year 1000. May be these mints did not issue Silver coins in the time of Akbar.

This seems a transitional type of Ahmadabad mint, having the Kalima comined with the Ilahi yr. For another example see ZENO #15131. From Ilahi yr.38 normal Ilahi-type sq. rupees are found for this mint.

Thanks engipress, I didn't know that.

My copy of Liddle's book just arrived (along with 3 other books).  :)
