The Charlemagne coin was issued today. And oddly enough, the ẞ on the minted piece looks much like the one on the plaster model. Good. :like:

The "codes" for the country and the mint are still weird, as Germany continues to use "D" instead of its DE as a country code on €2 commems. In this case, both letters have the same size which does not really make things better.

Both coins can now be found in the EU Official Journal. Mintages:
German States – Hamburg: 30 million
Charlemagne: 20 million

As for the country code, I still do not understand why a coin issuer is so fixated on cars. License plates and driver's licenses are about the only places where we use that "D". (OK, the coin program is the federal finance ministry's business, and our finance minister is an avid Porsche driver and IV supporter, so that may explain it ... ::) ) Pretty much everything else, from ISO codes including internet domains to ID cards, uses "DE", but least the combination of that single country letter and the mint mark letter – the way it was done on the Charlemagne coin – makes it a little easier to recognize which is which.

They are, but at least next to eachother so that it is immediately clear that the mintmark is D.

Right, see reply #2. But if we knew, from now on, that the two characters of equal size are always "D for Germany first, then mintmark", things would be at least a little less confusing. The "DE", plus the mintmark elsewhere, would be more obvious, but obviously the government prefers the "car style". 8)
