Sasanian Empire, Hormazd IV, Regnal Year 8 (AD 586), AR Drachm, Airan (Susa) mint (579-590 AD).
Obverse (First photo):
Bust right, wearing mural crown with frontal crescent, two wings, and star-in-crescent, ribbons and crescents on shoulders; stars flanking crown; double border, star-in-crescents.
Reverse (Second photo):
Fire altar with ribbons; flanked by two attendants; star and crescent flanking flame.
Mint mark, to the right of the right attendant, Airan (Susa شوش).
Hormazd IV (هرمز چهارم), was the Sasanian King of Kings of Iran from 579 to 590. He was the son and successor of Khosrow I, and his mother was a Khazar princess.
Susa (شوش‎) was an ancient city in the lower Zagros Mountains about 250 km (160 mi) east of the Tigris River, between the Karkheh and Dez Rivers. One of the most important cities of the Ancient Near East, Susa served as the capital of Elam and the Achaemenid Empire, and remained a strategic center during the Parthian and Sasanian periods.
