Farrukhsiyar, AR Rupee, Peshawar, RY-8
« on: March 05, 2021, 01:51:11 AM »
Farrukhsiyar
AR Rupee
Peshawar mint (nice full mint name at bottom!)
RY-8, AH date off flan? Perhaps AH (113)1, with '1' on obv. 11 o'clock?

This seems to be a scarce/rare coin. One of the less common mints for Farrukhsiyar.

A nicely preserved coin! Interesting to see the garbled date. It can't be off-flan, as the dotted circle shows the limits of the die. Although what you read as a 1 could in theory be an alif, that is where I would expect the date, except that the other two (?) characters don't resemble numbers.

I agree with Peter. The date most likely will be at 9 O'Clock and is off the flan here.

A nice and difficult to find coin.

Thanks, Peter and Amit! I agree--the date reading is indeed tentative. Happy to have found this coin regardless.

Congratulations Avik this coin is quite scrace and condition is far better than what you usually gets here in India .
If there would have been dual dates on the flan than you have cherry on the cake.
Enjoy !
Cheers ;D

Thank you very much for your comment! I should note that the arrangement of the legend is also slightly different for this coin compared to other Farrukhsiyar-Peshawar coins (see first image below, from CNG Auc 389 Lot 1039). Although such differences in legend are common, I didn't find a Peshawar coin with this legend arrangement, given the very few specimens of Farrukhsiyar-Peshawar that can be found online.

Would have been nice to have the AH date clearly listed as well! Even for this same obv die design, the date appears at 2 o'clock (see image 2, Shahjahanabad mint, taken from here, from Pankaj Tandon's inventory. Although I initially believed the alif to be (113)1, my conviction has been weakened. So, the reading remains tentative.
