2 Ottoman Coins with similarities that need attributions...
« on: February 07, 2021, 05:30:54 PM »
Hello,

I bought these two coins as Ottoman Empire, manghirs...  I know, I have seen these before but can't remember where...  I checked Zeno - didn't see a match there...

So, here's what I know about them:

Coin #1:  2.0g || 12-14mm || Copper
Question(s):  Inside the circle (is that 856/956AH date?!!?)  and what is written inside the circle and on outside as well...?!?!

Coin #2:  2.6g || 15-18mm || Copper
Question(s):  It has a circle (similar to the Coin #1) what is written in there...?  and what is written on the obverse/reverse...?

Thank you in advance, and hope your are all having a wonderful day...!!!  =))

Dear mti, your first coin (I have corrected the orientation of second photo):
Ottoman, Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror, 856 AH, Copper Manghir, Konstantiniyye (Constantinople, Turkey) mint (AH855-886/1444-1446 AD)
Obverse (First photo):
Inside central circle:
سنه ٨٥٦  , Sannah 856, Year 856(AH)
Margin:
محمد بن مراد خان عز نصره  , Muhammad bin Murad Khan, Azza Nasrahu (May his victory be glorious).
Reverse (Second photo):
Inside beaded circle:
Top: خلد ملكه  , Khallad Mulkahu (may his dominions perpetuate)
Middle: ضرب في   , Zarb fi (Struck in)
Bottom: قسطنطينية  , Konstantiniyye (Constantinople)
Mehmed II (محمد ثانى), commonly known as Mehmed the Conqueror (ابو الفتح‎), “the Father of Conquest”; he was an Ottoman Sultan who ruled from August 1444 to September 1446, and then later from February 1451 to May 1481.

Coin collecting has a curious name. It is also called the "Hobby of Kings".
