Not really a book ;) but an interesting study published at PLOS ONE (Public Library of Science): Maikel H. G. Kuijpers and Cătălin N. Popa (Faculty of Archaeology, Leiden University) write about the origins of money. You can also download a 16-page PDF version.

While I have not read the entire study yet (just started with a summarizing article), it sure is fascinating to see how certain objects from the early Bronze Age, roughly 4,000 years ago, were apparently more or less standardized. Kuijpers and Popa say that at least some of the objects they researched worked as means of payment in Central Europe at that time.
