In 1991 a new denomination was introduced: the 50 cents coin.

The coin was made of copper-nickel, was 26 mm in diameter, and weighed 7 grams.

It was heptagonal and a product of the Royal Mint (UK).

The reverse design of the 50 cents was based on a coin of the Cypriot Kingdom of Marion issued in the 4th century BC.

That ancient coin depicted the abduction of Europa by Zeus, who had transfigured himself into the form of a bull.

In 1992 the ½ cent coin ceased to be legal tender.

The final coins of the Cypriot pound were dated 2004.

On 1 January 2008 Cyprus officially adopted the euro.

The euro coins then replaced the coins of the Cyprus pound.
