Jahangir Ahmadabad Rupee - CLEANING ADVISE!
« on: September 16, 2020, 11:04:43 PM »
How can I clean this rust from the coin?

I tried soaking in the baking power+ water, in oil and rubbing with meshed cloth.

I don't like to use any hard chemical.

This rusty mark is so far not going out anywhere.

Any good advise will save the beautiful coin.

Hi,
I know you said that no hard chemicals, but the best option I can suggest to give it a soak for a few minutes in caustic soda solution. Usually that also dissolves the patina, but this coin is already stripped of the patina. After a few minutes of soak, you need to take it out and immediately wash the soda off using distilled water (I am lazy and used normal tap water). You may want to retry the action if needed. I did cleaned a similar Shah Jahan rupee this way.
The patina will come back as the coin gets exposed to polluted air.
Thanks,
Saikat

Ultrasonic cleaning might be worth a try.

Cleaned this Rupe a bit faster than I was expected.

I failed to clean it with baking powder, even tried vinegar.  Finally, I followed the unconventional method of soaking this coin in Nivea cream and then scraping off this dirt with a toothpick.
To minimize any damage, I kept the coin fully covered with cream while using toothpicks. Lubrication loosens the rust/dirt.

Is it Farwardin month?
