Muhammad Shah. Dam. Mint Khambayat. Mughal & IPS issues.
« on: June 22, 2020, 11:16:21 AM »
Khambayat or Cambay as the British called it was founded as a state around 1730 AD (AH 1142) when Mirza Ja‘far Mu’min Khan I, the last of the Mughal governors of Gujarat started acting more or less independent of the Mughal overlords. However the period is still regarded as Mughal era.

In 1742 Mirza Ja‘far Mu’min Khan I defeated his brother-in-law Nizam Khan, the Mughal governor of Khambhat and established himself in his place. This is the time when the state can be said to have become truly an independent entity. This date is around AH 1155.

I present here few copper coins of Khambayat - some issued when the state was still under official Mughal control while a few other are Dam issued soon after the state became independent of Mughal over-lordship.

The legends observed on these coins is:
Obverse: from bottom Up - Falus, Muhammad Shah Gazi, Sanah (AH date)
Reverse: Top down - Manus, Maimanat Sanah (RY date) Julus, Zarb Khambayat.

Both coins have the same design and legends - there appears almost no change in the coinage of the state from the time it became an independent entity when compared to the time it was under nominal Mughal control.

PS: the first coin is RY 13 with no AH date seen. This would be the period around when the local governor started acting independent.

The second coin is AH - / RY 15, by which time he had started ascertaining his independence but was still a Mughal governor.

The third coin is dated AH 1144 with Ry off flan.

The last two coins are of the time the state had become completely independent of Mughal over lordship.
Coin dates AH - / RY 26 and the coin dated AH 1156 or AH 1159 with RY off the flan.
