Austria: 2021 Collector Coins
« on: August 18, 2020, 04:16:32 PM »
Here is the Austrian Mint's issue schedule for 2021:

Interestingly, not a single coin will actually commemorate any specific event or anniversary. Every piece will be a "theme" coin or even be part of a theme series. Since quite a few collectors are interested in the €25 silver-niobium coins, here (mint's image) is this year's issue. Its theme is Smart Mobility, and you see various means of transport, from bicycles to air taxis ...

The piece (image: Austrian Mint) was designed by Helmut Andexlinger and Herbert Wähner. Specifications as usual: diameter 34 mm, ring Ag900, core Nb99.8, total weight 16.5 g. The coin (mintage 65,000) costs about 77 euro, VAT included.

Another interesting piece is the €20 coin that will be issued next month. The Austrian Mint starts a new series called "The Uncharted Universe", and the first coin will be dedicated to the Milky Way. Now that we have all seen dome shaped coins ;) , this is one that is both convex and concave. The image, again stolen borrowed from the Mint, does not only show the design (one side is colored) but also the shape. The position of "our sun" is marked (Sonne), and also those of some other objects that will apparently play a role on future issues ...

Designed by Helmut Andexlinger, this silver (Ag925) coin also has a diameter of 34 mm. The weight is about 22 grams (fine 20.74 g, total 22.42 g). Just as the silver-niobium piece, this one will be proof only, with a mintage of 30,000. The price (incl. VAT) will be about 70 euro.

I used to order directly from the Austrian mint until recently, as I was saving the VAT charges. However, it's no more a feasible option as they have increased the shipping costs from €15 to €40. Even worse, they have partnered with UPS now, which is causing me more trouble as customs' officials will always impose a heavy custom duty on parcels received through private couriers...

Both the coins are nice and innovative as usual though! :)
