China to issue commemorative coins on auspicious culture

Xinhua, May 16, 2020

BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhua) -- China's central bank will issue a set of commemorative coins featuring Chinese auspicious culture.

The set includes six coins: two gold, three silver and one gold-silver bimetallic, all legal tender, the People's Bank of China said on its website.

Chinese characters Jixiang, meaning auspiciousness, dominates the obverse of the coins, while the reverse sides are decorated with traditional patterns such as cranes, lilies and goldfish, all symbols of auspiciousness and fortune.

The round, gold coin, which is 20 mm in diameter, contains five grams of pure gold and has a face value of 80 yuan (11.28 U.S. dollars).

Two of the silver coins, one with a diameter of 60 mm and one with 40 mm, are 30 yuan and 20 yuan in denomination, with an issuing amount of 10,000 and 20,000 respectively.

Of the heart-shaped coins in the set, one contains 3 grams of pure gold and has a denomination of 50 yuan, while the other contains 30 grams of silver with a denomination of 10 yuan, the central bank said.

The gold-silver bimetallic coin, 30 mm in diameter, contains 8 grams of pure gold and 4 grams of silver, with an issuing amount of 5,000.

The set will be available for sale starting next Wednesday, according to the central bank.
