He was both. So were quite a few others like Sant Tukaram, Sant Dynashewar

What about Narayan Gurudev, Basweshwara etc.?
At least their followers were not violent enough to prevent issue of circulation coins.
Followers of Guru Nanak ( and Gobind Singh ) prevented issue of coin in to circulation, on Guru Granth Saheb in Nepal too.

Let me answer one by one -

1) The coin is not named Mata Vaishno Devi but "SHRI MATA VAISHNO DEVI SHRINE BOARD SILVER JUBILEE", the two are different.

Yes technically you are right. The subject of the coin was Silver Jubilee of the Shrine Board. However what makes coins religious in nature was depiction of Deity on the coins.as against some other symbol associated with Shrine Board.

Clearly the honourable court ruled in favour of Shrine Board coins. After this, coins of Nabakalewar also depicted Deity.

If there was a bar in our constitution against such coins, the verdict of learned court would have been different.

depiction of Diety

What is that? You won't be able to come up with a standardized definition of what a Deity is, from any law book of the world. That is precise reason for the court verdict. Court verdicts are not given upon some abstract idea. Had it been religious symbolism, it would have been interesting to see what the Court says.

Dear friends

India will be celebrating the 550th birth year of Sikh Guru  - Guru Nanak Dev ji in 2019. Guru Nanak was born on 15th April 1469. Guru Nanak was the founder of Sikh religion.

I am sure, Government of India will issue commemorative coins

Regards

Sanjay Kansal

Sir, the birth date appears to be 23 November 1469 and not 15th April. Is that right? Just making sure. Hoping the ministry springs a surprise by issuing these coins next week when the Kartarpur Corridor foundation is laid in Punjab.

Thanks.

Hope they release circulating commemorative coin too..

QuoteThey jointly released commemorative coins of gold and silver, prepared by the SGPC to mark the occasion, which have picture of Gurdwara Nankana Sahib on one side and and Gurdwara Ber Sahib on the other.

Seems like similar to the recently released Shri Saibaba Silver Coin by PM Modi.

That's right, these are private commemorative tokens/medals, not coins.

This is a silver medal of 25 grams, minted by Mumbai mint ( mintage 10,000 ) and  being sold in the temple shop. It was released by the Prime minister of India on centenary of the temple. According to Mrs Rubal Aggarwal, Chairperson of the temple trust, more will be minted if there is a demand for it.

Was this the launch of the coin?

Was this the launch of the coin?

From what I see on Facebook, this is the launch ceremony. A gold and a silver medal were released. The gold one much smaller than the silver one and this photograph does not have the medals framed, rather their pictures.

This seems to be a new trend now with Guru Nanak, Sai Baba Trust, Waltair Railway Division all "commemorative coin launch" ceremonies have had medals issued. These are minted by the official mint and the VVIP packaging looks very much like the proof coins packaging of the same. This surely must come as a relief to collectors who had an overdose of mint offerings. Thanks to the government for coming up with this idea!

@Pabitra, @kansal888, what can you make of this one? It seems even you guys were caught unawares of this. Please try to find out from your sources. Thanks!

I am bit confused as no proper clarity as well as no gazette notification.

These so called commemorative gold and silver coins (tokens) were made by SGPC (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) and released through Ex-PM Manmohan Singh.

Whereas at the PM Modi's blog, it has mentioned as "Commemorative coin and postage stamps will be released by the Government of India to mark this momentous occasion".  (https://www.narendramodi.in/cabinet-approves-commemoration-of-the-550th-birth-anniversary-of-shri-guru-nanak-devji-542359)

The so called media says as commemorative coin even for Waltair Railway Division! They made the big news last year with Rs 100 coins in circulation and will be in your wallet (MGR and MSS coins).

The media seems to have little literacy on these matters. The release of coins is a minor matter to the country in any case and not newsworthy.

The PM's website itself mentions him releasing coins for Saibaba Samadhi Centenary!

QuoteThe Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, will visit Shirdi, Maharashtra on October 19, 2018.

Prime Minister will unveil the plaque to mark the laying of foundation stone of various development works of Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust. He will release a silver coin to commemorate Centenary year of Shri Saibaba Samadhi.

https://www.narendramodi.in/pm-to-visit-shirdi-maharashtra-on-october-19-541896

Here they talk about a silver coins being released.

QuoteThe Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, visited Shirdi, in Maharashtra, today. At a public meeting, he unveiled the plaque to mark the laying of foundation stone of various development works of Shri SaibabaSansthan Trust. He also released a silver coin to commemorate Centenary year of Shri Saibaba Samadhi.

So now all speculations on "coins being released" might mean medals unless there is a gazette notification. @Pabitra and @kansal888 might investigate and let us know what is up!

This is not a new idea but many mints all over the world, do mint private tokens, subject to terms and conditions, when they have spare capacity.

Such  tokens being called coins are a new thing in India. I personally think it is due to journalistic over enthusiasm.

Here is what was released
