C a r i b b e a n  G u i l d e r

Announced: January 2011

Issue Date: 2014 1 January 2021 January 2024 Second half 2024.

Changes

This new currency will replace the Netherlands Antilles guilder.

Context

The Netherlands Antilles was dissolved on 10th October 2010. Curaçao and Sint-Maarten separately became autonomous constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. (Sint Maarten is only one half of an island - the other half, Saint Martin, belongs to France). The other islands, Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba (known as "BES" for short) became special municipalities of the Netherlands. They now use the US dollar.

The Caribbean Guilder will be issued by a joint Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten. It will be pegged to the US dollar at a rate of 1.79 guilder to one US dollar and will be equal in value to the Aruba florin. The currency will be phased in over three months. The 2.5 guilder coin and the 25 guilder notes present in the Netherlands Antillean guilder series will be replaced by 20-based denominations.
