not especially.

As daft as it sounds - some of this rubbish sells rather well on Ebay  ;)

I do to my shame have a collection of Isle of Man / Gibraltar Christmas 50p's.
Ever since I got some in my change when I was on the Isle of Man. >:(

I visited the Isle of Man in 1981, and had lots of fun collecting their coins. After their first three sets (see below), I've never liked any of their designs since. But it's all down to taste.

ISLE OF MAN.

1975 Set.

½p.   Cushag flower.
1p.   Ring chain pattern.
2p.   Falcons.
5p.   Tower of Refuge.
10p.  Three legs of Man.
50p.  Viking ship.

Designer: Christopher Ironside.

1979 Set.

½p.   Herring.
1p.   Loghtan ram.
2p.   Manx shearwater.
5p.   Laxey wheel.
10p.  Triskele.
50p.  Viking ship.
£1.   Triskele.

Designer: Barry Stanton

1977. ½p.   Herring.   F.A.O.   Designer: Barry Stanton
1979. 50p.  Replica of Viking ship. Used in Tynwald Millennium celebrations.
Edge inscription commemorates visit of QEII.

1980 Set.
½p.   Herring.
1p.   Manx cat.
2p.   Chough.
5p.   Loghtan ram.
10p.  Peregrine falcon.
50p.  Viking longship.

Designer: Leslie Lindsay.

yes I know what you mean.
I'm told we're stuck with the post-2004 designs next year. :-[
(at 6 years these are one of the longest lasting designs.)

Who told you that? Do you have contacts in Pobjoy - or whoever now mints the IOM coins?

I haven't got any of the Manx Christmas 50p. coins. They remind me of those Tongan Christmas 1 Pa'anga medal-coins that the Pobjoy Mint put out in Christmas cards in the early 1980's.

I do have a Viking Longship 50p. & a Tourist Trophy motorbike 50p. in my collection though.

As you can see from my list, Aidan, there are actually four Viking ship designs from the IOM between 1975 and 1980.

The IOM Christmas and TT 50p's coins are not medal coins - they do circulate as I did find some in my change.
This was back in 1992 though :-\
