The obverse of the issued coins omitted the flag and showed the year of issue: the first anniversary of independence.

The issued coin hides some of the person's bottom, presumably to protect Western sensibilities of the time, since this would be sold to collectors. Western attitudes have changed somewhat since then, in these days of the thong and the "wedgie".  :D

Here we see the issued 10,000 vatu. There were only two coins in the eventual series, and both were designed by Mr Elderton.
