Ghaznavid Nasir Al-Daula Ibrahim (AH 451-493;AD 1059-1099)
« on: April 15, 2013, 06:19:28 PM »
This coin puzzles me with the first line of its legend. On one side is bull with "Samanth Deva" legend. On the other side, the five line legend starts with something I cannot read. The last line appears to me like "Ibrahim", I am not very sure. Please help.

Don't have any references at hand so can not tell you the exact ruler. But this is a Ghaznavid bull Jital.

Edit: A quick peak on zeno seems to confirm : Nasir ad Dawla Ibrahim AH451-492.
Text according to Zeno: "adil/as-sultan/al-mu'azzam/abu'l-muzaffar/Ibrahim".

Edit: There seem to be some variants. This looks like Tye 103.3.

Going a bit through the Ghaznavids in my collection today.
I had attributed the coin above mainly on the basis of its likeliness with a Tye#103 Ibrahim Bull Jital in my collection.
Looking at my coin a bit better i see today that i had actually misattributed this one.
To show the similarities and differences i added this post to this previous thread.

The coin below very much looks like the Tye#103 type above. However, in the margin of the text side there is Arab script, and not a dotted border. This makes that this coin should actually be attributed as Tye#102.2
AR 15 mm, 3.04 gr. Mint Lahore.

Dr.Sreedhar's coin appears to start with the word 'saif'. This is listed as GZ 35 in G/G for Nasir al daula Ibrahim..Following is my coin even thoughit is of much lower grade compared to his coin..but my coin is a coloured issue ;D ;D ;D

That's a really tropical sea green color ! Agree on your correction of the upper word to "Saif" (Sword). Over the years i have slowly gotten better at attribution and reading. Good to encounter and correct previous mistakes.

On a closer look to the legend on the obverse, I am still getting confused ??? about the top line word. Could that be "asif" (آصف) rather than "saif"(سیف)? Rajagopal's coin starts with "saif" for sure.

I agree with Rajagopal ji. It is GZ35 of G&G. With saif on top and dotted margins. The legends on Dr.Sreedhar's coin has flattened a bit giving an appearance of Asaf. But comparing wuth my G&G and Rajagopal ji and Anthony's coin, I'm sure it is Nasir al daula Ibrahim
