Coin collecting has a curious name. It is also called the "Hobby of Kings".

This shows one of the five coin types for Q. Wilhelmina. Dutch collectors call this type "ermine mantle". The coin looks like its predecessors and successors, suggesting no change. In truth, it was rather the opposite. The Netherlands had been able to remain neutral in the first world war. It felt so financially strong it held on to the gold standard, when other countries were abandoning it in fact, if not in law. As a result, a period of deflation undermined growth, the Amsterdam stock exchange and created a severe unemployment problem that gave more power to socialism. Significantly, in 1919 laws were accepted making a free Sunday and a maximum working day of 8 hours compulsory. Also, in 1919, woman's suffrage was accepted. Men continued to design the coins and they show no change. ;)

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
