I know I've seen this before, but despite looking through South Asia Coins twice I can't find it. Could someone please tell me where it is from?

16.32 gm, 22 mm

Thanks

Alan

Looks to me very much like KM# 731, falus of Shahjahanabad, Mughal Empire, Shah Alam II. Nice piece.

Thank you very much: I was so convinced it was Princely states that I'd not even thought of looking through the Mughal section, though of course that must have been where I saw it before.

It is a takka of Jodhpur and not a Mughal issue (as mentioned in the SAC Catalogue). Jan Lingen (Oesho) has listed this in Jodhpur. The date is retrograde 1202.

Glad to help. If I understood correctly, retrograde means that the date is written right to left, which certainly appears to be the case on this coin. I could be completely wrong, as Amit said, but so can Krause. What I do know is that the image in my Krause looks one hell of a lot like your coin, but I don't know how to adjudicate beyond that. Best of luck nailing it down.

These are now attributed to Merta mint in Marwar (Jodhpur State)

Vic, is there any catalog or article reference I can quote for the new attribution?
