Very interesting, thanks.   I do have a few of those 1858's and 1859's in the attic.   I rigged up a microscope to look at coins in my collection when I was a kid.   A real eye opener.   Now for me this same sort of having to be aware of how the pieces were made gets applied to cash coins.   Anytime some process is "unknown" people tend to assume it "just happens", with finished results magically popping out.
