Two 19th century Japanese coins dated

Hello, everyone.

I am hoping that someone can kindly help me determine the dates of these 2 pieces from Japan, please. I am working on selling a consignment for a neighbor who is recently widowed and these 2, well, I tried and failed to figure out the dates. The larger 50 sen coin I believe to be Japan Y-4 and the smaller 5 sen piece is Y-19. Any assistance would be very much appreciated and thanks so much.

Hi Alan,

5 Yen is indeed Y19 and the year is Yr. 22 (1889).  It is derived as 年 二 十 二 = Year 2 x 10 + 2 = Yr. 22. The 50 Yen is correctly identified as Y4 and is Yr. 3 (1870) which is shown as 年 三...

Hello, Ram and thanks SO much!! I saw the 2 Japanese symbol for 2 and the one for 10 on the 5 sen piece but I just didn't know how to interpret them. So you add them and add it to the reigning date. OK, I think I have it but if the need again arises, may I post again?
