The Royal Canadian Mint has landed its first contract to produce nickel-plated steel blanks for Bank Indonesia in Jakarta.

The blanks will be used to produce Indonesia’s 1000 Rupiah circulation coin.

The contract brings to 34 the number of countries now using the Mint’s multi-ply plated steel technology for their coin currencies.

"The Mint’s multi-ply plated technology is the most advanced plating process in the world and is renowned for producing high-quality, cost-effective and secure coinage products," Sandra Hanington, president and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint, said in a written statement.

"We are proud that these blanks which will be used daily in Indonesia will originate from our Winnipeg facility where our employees apply their technical expertise to deliver the best quality and value to our customers."

The Mint is the Crown corporation responsible for the minting and distribution of Canada’s circulation coins. It also offers foreign customers a full spectrum of coin manufacturing and consulting services, including the production of circulation numismatic coins, ready-to-strike blanks, medals, medallions and tokens, to coin distribution management, marketing and communications, and technology transfers.

Its multi-ply plated steel technology was first developed in 2001 to make Canadian circulation coins. It consists of alternating layers of nickel, copper and nickel plated over a steel core.

Since opening in 1976, the corporation’s Winnipeg production plant has produced circulation coins and blanks for over 80 countries.
