Is this a transitional type or a mule, perhaps?

No Peter, it isn't a mule : on a mule we should have the persian month under the Ilahi date, and not the mintname.

Informations on this coin have been provided by Shailendra Bhandare (ONS Newsletter 166) :
"Such coins, dated Ilahi 47 with the persian month Shahrewar, are known and this means that this type was limited to the issue of a single month."

Since this paper, today I would read better "tir" than "shahrewar" for the month ? as It seems that there is no room for a longer name??? and that the 2 dots of "T" are well present at 1 o'clock (the "single month issue" would fall... except if it isn't shahrewar on the other dams !....)

I had commented that similiar coin is known for Balapur as well and as luck would have it, I have added this half dam with mint name on both faces for Balapur.

Exceptional coin and a great acquisition ! :applause: (with "Balapur" fully present, rarely seen on coins of this mint )
These 2 dams from Burhanpur and Balapur mints are indeed very comparable, with a second mintname in place of a persian month.

I see that Burhanpur and Balapur are not very far from each other (180 km), may be there is some link for this unusual practice ? (engraver ? mint officer?) ???

hereafter, I join pictures of reverses of dams from these two mints which show exactly the same style...if it isn't the same engraver, it is his brother ! ::)

Thanks Bernard sir,
The 4 aouthern mints have a same style of engraving the diea. The 4 mints include Burhanpur, Balapur, Berar and rare mint of Sultanpur. Seems there are one master die engraver for these mints.. I have even heard of a coin similiar to the one posted above with Balapur on one side and Burhanpur on other side in the hands of a Mumbai collectors. That is fascinating.
