Russia urged to coin currency
Kazakhstani president invites former Soviet republics to set up a common currency to replace the US dollar or euro
March 13, 2009, Tony Halpin

Moscow President Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan has invited Russia and other former Soviet republics to set up a common currency to replace the US dollar or euro for use in trade between the states. Mr Nazarbayev, 68, said that the "yevraz" could be a stepping stone to a new international currency, and urged world leaders at next month's G20 summit in London to take up the idea. The proposal was seen as a snub, however, to Russia's ambitions of turning the rouble into a regional reserve currency.
