Nikolay Was Saved by a Gold Coin from his Grandma
The fashion photographer was flying to Las Vegas for a photo session when his plane crashed

The only Bulgarian onboard a plane that fell in the icy waters of the Hudson River, NY City was carrying a gold coin that his granny had given him as an amulet. To his mother's words, the 32-year-old fashion photographer had been carrying the charm on him for a year. Last summer he told his parents to send him the coin in the USA as he believed it would bring him good luck. Illiev caught the plane to Charlotte in the last minute. As he was in a hurry for Las Vegas, he picked up a transfer flight. When he was taken out of the river, he called his mother using the mobile of one of the rescuers.

"I didn't know he was onboard that plane. I didn't watch the news. I even could not recognize his voice over the phone at first,?' Nikolai's mother said.

Nikolay quoted the pilot saying that the landing would be a difficult one. The passengers did not know it would be an emergency landing in the waters of Hudson.
