Akbar Square Rupee: Ilahi date 3(9?) or 1595/6
« on: March 09, 2009, 09:59:28 PM »
I can "read" the obverse, it is quite similar to a coin that Overlord studied:
Allah akbar jalla jalal
"God is very Great, glorified be His Glory".
with "akbar" the ruler alluded to in the epithet.
OK, on to the Reverse:
That gets a bit more difficult for me.  At the bottom, I can read, from right to left, "30" and Ahmadabad.  If "30" is the Ilahi date, then 1585/6 would be the translation in our calandar.  Does that seem right?

Above is a shorthand symbol for "month".  To the right of "month" is the last letter of one of the twelve months.

Over a year earlier, Oesho helped us out with a similar, though round, coin.  In that coin he said that the month is "Mihr", or Mithra or Libra.  Is that the case here as well?

Hi Richie

You are right about the Ilahi month. Here is another example with the same month. I think the Ilahi year is 3X (most likely 39). Check out this coin, for example.

3X? Hmmm.  I was thinking that the mark to the right of the pesian 3 was a dot for "0".
I tried using your link for "this" but I didn't get anything.

The Ilahi date is indeed 3x (probably 39 as seen on the ZENO coin). Mint: Ahmadabad. The Ilahi month is most probably Tir (Cancer). This also applies to this coin

Thanks Oesho. It is great to see you back.
@Mihr vs Tir
Thanks to you, I realize the difference now. "Mihr" would be "Mim+He+Re". None of these characters takes dots above or below. "Tir" would be "Te+Ye+Re". "Ye" is written with two dots below it, which are visible quite clearly on our coins.

I will correct the sketch when I have more time.
