Mexico, 8 escudos, 1838.  Gold.  Another hat on a stick: a liberty cap. Or is it a homemade bookmark?

Holland, 2 gulden, 1681.  A hat on a stick. Or is it a hat stand?

That is the Liberty Pole - a lance with the cap of liberty. See here (English), and also there (Dutch) for example ...

That is an interesting observation by itself.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Egypt 5 Piastres 1975.jpg

Egypt, 5 milliemes, 1975.

Nefertiti's hat is branded with the International Women's Year logo.

Designer hats in ancient Egypt? Cool!

Is there a special name for that type of hat?

Somewhat complicated question. The crown as pictured on the coin is incomplete and that of one of the few Nefertiti busts still in existence. It would have had a cobra on its tail (uraeus) jutting out from the front. That crown (and also an incomplete rendition) is known today as the Nefertiti cap, because no other pharaoh wore it. The normal crown for a pharaoh is the crown of upper and lower Egypt or double crown.

A crown, then. But it looks so very different from what we regard as crowns these days, that I would have expected a different term.

Only today did I learn that this coin does not represent a woman.

The design is based on a real woman - Sabiha Tansuğ, an ethnologist. She was photographed during her exhibition of traditional Anatolian woman headdresses in 1968.
