looks to be from Afghanistan or Iran, found a similar pattern under Afghanistan KM#B101 but it's not the same coin.

Really an uncommon coin ! congratulalions Capn. for this discovery.
Very few elements are available for a certain attribution : the denomination :"quarter", a design, metal, size, weight and style.
to summarize:
- the style is XVI-XVII┬░ c.
- a "quarter" of 4,5g / 14mm indicates that the "full" unit could be the dam (+/- 20g :Akbar to Aurangzeb)
- the design is typical of afghan copper issues and this one, as you noticed, is quite similar to one found for Qandahar.

Qandahar has been lost by mughals at the early beginning of Akbar's reign and recovered not before 1003AH; only 1 copper  coin of Akbar is known from this mint, dated Ilahi 51 (mihr).
Scarce copper issues are known for Jahangir (1020-22AH) : +/-8,5g. Qandahar is then lost again by mughals in 1032AH and only recovered shortly in 1047 by Shah jahan (a falus is also known with this date)
The conclusion is if that this coin is a mughal copper from Qandahar, it could be most probably of Jahangir.
Am I right?

You could well be right saro,  frank on zeno maybe thought along the same lines, if you have a zeno account perhaps you could add your thoughts to my zeno post, otherwise can I have your permission to cut & paste parts of it ?

Further investigation by frank on zeno reveals it to be very rare indeed! :-

10-January-13 2:49pm

After some research:
The reference is
R.B.Whitehead:
"Some notable coins of the Mughal Emperors of India", part I,
pp. 115-149, plates VI-VIII in:
Numismatic Chronicle(NC), 5th series, volume III, London, 1923.
Your coin is described(from the British Museum specimen) on page 137, no. 86, plate VII,
as struck during the time of the Mughal Emperor Akbar.
A very rare coin.

My congratulations !

I'd like to read that original NC article by R.B.Whitehead:, the earlier ones are available as free download but not the 5th series as far as I can tell  :'(
