1 Franc 1915 Belgium Square ( Token / Coin )
« on: August 31, 2012, 10:56:50 PM »
Just could ad this one to my collection ,

It was designed by Georges Verbanck ( famous sculptor from Ghent Belgium)
During WWI the city of Ghent run out of coins and they decided to make 50 centimes ( square ) 1 franc ( square ) and 2 Franc ( Square ) but during the process of making the coins they had problems making the 1 franc square so they made it round , a few years later they decided to make the 1 franc square coin as a charity token.

Very interesting. I wonder why they didn't make it in zinc. I am familiar with the co-op tokens, but I haven't seen this one before. Is the other side blank?

The originals were in brass plated iron; values 50c, 1Fr, [2 types] 2Fr, 5Fr. [2 types].

From Stacks:-

2 Frank, 1918, re-issued 1922. Round, Copper gilt, 27.4mm. City Arms, all-Flemish legends include UITBETAALBAAR JANUARI 1922, redeemable until Jan. 1, 1922. Postwar charity re-issue. KM Tn5 *
1 Frank, 1915. Square Copper gilt, 20.7mm. KM Tn3 var. Lion rampant, bilingual legend STAD GENT - VILLE DE GAND. KM says struck 1920 for charitable purposes. These "Belgian Notgeld" items were listed in the first edition of Wayte Raymond's Coins of the World, reappearing decades later in KM. The tokens relate to German efforts to foster Flemish separatism in occupied Belgium.

Brilliant, Aernout. Those cardboard tokens are veritable period art pieces.

However, I was thinking of the tokens of the coöperatie Vooruit (1891-1970). These are a lot more common.

@ Figleaf,

The 'broodkaarten' (bread cards) are easier to find.

Some examples in the attachement.

do you have a picture of NBFB-GN7: 2 frank 1918 - 1 000 ex - Au-Cu-Au - 27 mm - 6.5 gr - Sinia (square) ?

I know the round version , but i have never seen or did hear about a square one , and also the national bank in belgium did not give me any information on a square from Sinia

I found a 2 francs 1915 in a junk box this morning. Quality could be better, but is acceptable for the amount of eurocents I paid...
