Here is, on a €2 coin from the German States series, the city hall of Bremen. The "Roland" statue in front (in reality it is a little further away from the city hall) symbolizes the city rights. Until the mid-1960s, the building was also the seat of the Bremen state parliament.

Another city hall - this is the German €100 gold coin (Unesco Cultural Heritage series) issued in 2004. You see several characteristic buildings in Bamberg, BY, with the old city hall in front.

What is interesting about the building is that it is located in the river (see http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Datei:Bamberg_Altes_Rathaus_BW_2.JPG). It was built in the 15th century, right in the middle between the "bishop's town" and the "citizens town".

The term "Rotes Rathaus" may make some people think of communism (as in Red Army, Red Star, etc.), especially as that coin was issued by the socialist GDR. However, it is simply the red color of the bricks that gave the building - which is about 150 years old - its name.

Initially it was the seat of the city council (of the "undivided" Berlin). In the years when East Berlin and West Berlin were parts of different political systems, the "Western" city council had its seat in the Schöneberger Rathaus while the "Eastern" city council stayed in the Rotes Rathaus. After the 1990 unification, the two merged into one, so to say, with its seat at the Red City Hall. The official term for the building has since then been "Berliner Rathaus".
