Reactions of the coin world on the war in Ukraine

Any word on what they want to do with the profit from the sale of the medal?

In red and bold at the bottom of the page it says: "All proceeds from the sale of the medals will be donated to the Holy Father for charitable work in favour of the Ukrainian people." But as in other, similar cases it may very well make more sense to simply support help initiatives and charity organizations directly.

Latvia will also issue coins related to the war in Ukraine. The country will issue at least 1 commemorative 2 euro coin and at least 1 collectors coin with this theme.

Lithuania is also considering to issue one or more coins with this theme.

Statement on the conflict in Ukraine

Samlerhuset Group BV condemns Russia's military aggression against Ukraine, which has tragic consequences for the population and threatens Europe.

We are deeply shocked and saddened by the devastating scenes of aggression and violence over the last week that has caused the displacement of many tens of thousands of Ukrainian people from their homes and marked the onset of what could be the largest humanitarian crisis on our continent in decades. We express our solidarity with the Ukrainian people and fully support their brave resistance of this assault on their sovereignty, independence, and the right to self-determination. 

With immediate effect, all companies within the Samlerhuset Group will be removing from sale all Russian or Russian partner related products. In addition, we will no longer distribute products relating to The Central Bank of the Russian Federation (also known as the Bank of Russia). Furthermore, we fully support the scope and strength of the sanctions put in place by Europe and the local governments of the markets in which we operate and will implement them across our Group. We will continue to make future business decisions based on the evolving situation. 

In the meantime, given the scale of the emerging crisis, we are working with our charitable partners in all markets to provide urgent support for aid and humanitarian assistance.

The Mint of Spain has released a copper-nickel medal in support of the people of Ukraine. A part of the proceeds from the sale of the medals will go to the victims of the war. The medal costs 10 euros and is being released in the in the typical transparent plastic packaging, in which the Spanish mint releases its collectors coins. It has an initial mintage of 5,000 pieces.

I see nothing in the Samlerhuset statement that is not already an EU legal obligation or the logical consequence of financial sanctions.

The first war-related coin of Ukraine was issued. The reverse design differs from the one that was originally chosen as part of the design competition. The flags were rearranged. Furthermore, the flags of Switzerland and France were added while the flags of Spain, Denmark and Greece were omitted. The latter is somewhat remarkable as these 3 countries all support Ukraine. On the German flag an eagle was added. The blue of the Dutch and French flag appears to be too dark.

The coins were presented by Deputy NBU Governor Oleksii Shaban in a meeting with the Ukraine's First Deputy Foreign Minister Emine Dzhaparova and representatives of the embassies of the following 12 countries: France, Japan, the Netherlands, the UK, Canada, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Sweden, the United States, the Czech Republic and Poland. The reverse of these commemorative coins depicts, among other things, the flags of the above countries, which are providing Ukraine with comprehensive humanitarian, economic, security and military aid.

The pieces are made of nickel silver and upto 250,000 will be minted.

The "hands" side I like. (And moving the "5" and the "гривень" closer together was a modification of the original design that makes sense in my opinion.) Now the "flags" side was strangely modified: Adding the English motto makes sense to me, but when you decide to put a flag on a coin, do it right. Maybe the German eagle (which is not part of the national flag) was added because otherwise the flag would have been hardly visible. But why some flags were replaced by others is something I do not quite understand.

Lithuania is also considering to issue one or more coins with this theme.

Seems that a silver €10 collector coin will be issued later this year. And next year Lithuania plans to issue a commemorative €2 coin: "Together with Ukraine". But the designs are not known yet.

The Polish private mint Mint XXI, which also has a development centre located in Lviv, Ukraine, has recently issued a special David and Goliath coin, to commemorate the events in 2022. The piece has a denomination of 10 cedis and was issued for the government of Ghana.

A dark and troubling picture, reminiscent of Goetz medals and post-Edwardian wood cut book illustrations. Not exactly modern, but striking in its difference of style and the subject does warrant a disturbing medal.

In the fourth quarter of this year, Lithuania will issue a silver 10 euro coin to commemorate the Ukrainian struggle for freedom. The piece was designed by Ukrainian artist Svitlana Matvieienko.

The Royal Canadian Mint recently released a coin to commemorate the Summit Series, a series of 6 ice-hockey matches between Canada and the Soviet Union that took place in 1972. The competition was won by Canada. As the Soviet Union is a painful subject these days, the mint decided that all net proceeds from the sale of the coins will be donated to the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

Mint XXI has released a 5 dollars coin of Niue depicting a warrior of Azovstal, to commemorate Ukraine's defenders.
The reverse of the coin was designed by Ukrainian artist Maksym Palenko.
