Namibia: pattern coins of the 1990s

Namibia, 1 Mark, 1990. 

Namibia was formerly a German colony, known as German South West Africa, hence the use of the mark currency.

However, German rule over this territory was punctuated by numerous rebellions by its native African peoples.

These culminated in a campaign of German reprisals from 1904 to 1908, known as the Herero and Namaqua genocide.

So using the mark would have been highly politically incorrect.

PROBE is German for 'TRIAL'.  'ESSAI' is French for 'TRIAL'.
