An interesting overdate on a beautiful 5 Mark coin. Apparently, this isn't an error but the product of necessity. By using a left over die from 1931 and repunching the date the die wouldn't be wasted. Germany at the time was in dire financial straits and economies had to be made at all levels.

Mike Byers, a recognized expert on US and world mint errors opines that at some point it was decided that the overdated coins should be withheld from circulation and destroyed. There are only two known to have survived. Since this example shows some wear (graded AU-55) some must have escaped into circulation and were later found by sharp-eyed collectors.
