2016 Japanese Proof Set

Surprised to see the 1 yen in this set. I thought it was de-monetised...

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Nice set! I have always had a soft spot for the circulating Japanese designs. I need to cave and get a proof set or two, but they can be a bit pricey.

Do the 1 yen still circulate in Japan? I thought the mint there now only makes them "as needed" every few years, to replace the ones that need to be removed from circulation. Never heard anything about demonetization.

They made very few 1 yen coins in the early 2000s, but started producing them in the past few years. They are used the same way that pennies are used in the US: everyone has them, no one wants them.

Very nice!    Thanks for sharing!

I wonder how long Japan will use cash?

Will they follow South Korea's lead, and go "cashless" and "coinless"??
